Inscape Outscape: A group exhibition
We are pleased to share an upcoming exhibition, ‘Inscape Outscape’. A collection of works by a group of contemporary artists who teach at the St Ives School of Painting.
Made up of work from 18 artists, all with connections to St Ives and Cornwall, the exhibition will be open to the public from 10-17 December 2024, at the historic Borlase Smart Studio in Porthmeor Studios.

The group of artists, all of whom teach at the School, include Alice Mumford, Amy Albright, Camilla Dixon, Emily Roberts, Gary Long, Greg Humphries, Hilary Jean Gibson, Ilker Cinarel, Iona Sanders, Jill Eisele, Kate Southworth, Kieran Stiles, Kitty Hillier, Liz Hough, Liz Luckwell, Marion Taylor, Tom Rickman and Victoria Gillow.
The exhibition title, formed and selected by the group, brings together two terms, ‘Inscape’ and ‘Outscape’.
Inscape, a term derived by the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, and referred to by artists such as Tony O’Malley and Roberto Matta can be seen to mean ‘work made in relation to an artist’s psyche’, as ‘interior landscape’, and it can also refer ‘to the idea of intrinsic form’.
Outscape is a term related to Northrop Fry. He used it to mean ‘work made where all the energy is directed away from the artist and towards the subject/object’s mood or situation of the work’.
Visitors will be met by different artists each day, they can take time to view the exhibition in full, and are able to purchase artwork if they wish to do so. For anyone who is inspired by the exhibition, there will be an opportunity to book onto an upcoming course at St Ives School of Painting, led by one of the featured artists.
The group will be hosting a Private View of the exhibition, open to the public on Tuesday 10 December, 17.00-19.00. The exhibition will be open daily, 10.00-17.00, 10-17 December at Porthmeor Studios.
