Simplify and refine your painting skills on this half day workshop. Let go of the detail and avoid distraction to create powerful responses in oil paint to interior studies and landscape.

Begin the workshop by exploring composition through line using pencil and graphite, learning to let go of detail and work more intuitively through memory and observation. Through a series of studies, participants will be encouraged to simplify forms and respond more freely to their surroundings.

Your tutor will then demonstrate how to create expressive oil grounds inspired by the landscape and environment of St Ives, before combining interior and landscape studies using oil paint on board. By focusing on simple forms, thoughtful composition and a limited colour palette, students will create dynamic paintings full of energy and character.

This workshop is ideal if you are looking for a new way to free-up your painting practice or if you are looking for working in a way between figuration and abstraction. The St. Ives School of Painting is a friendly and welcoming place for all levels of ability, class sizes are kept small to create a nurturing environment for all.

What to Bring

All materials are provided. Please wear sensible shoes and bring a coat or sunhat as appropriate just in case we venture outside.

Timings and Breaks

The workshop starts at 1.30pm and finishes at 4.30pm, please aim to arrive ten to fifteen minutes before the start time. We will serve tea and coffee at break times during the morning.
