Course details

Explore the playful and naïve painting style of artist Holly Razavi, whose oil paintings showcase delightful characters engaged in their daily activities, in various coastal and city landscapes.

Inspired by celebrated British painters such as L.S. Lowry, Helen Bradley and Bryan Pearce who were renowned for their depictions of everyday life in local settings, Holly Razavi will take you through how this has led her own development as an oil painter, sharing with you some key techniques you can apply in your own work.

Working from footage of the local landscape, Holly will guide you through her method of deconstructing colours and forms to create art that captures fleeting moments in time.  Try your hand at painting stylised characters to infuse a playful element into your paintings and develop your confidence in oil painting by experimenting with a limited colour palette.

Session 1:

Holly will introduce the ingredients needed for selecting powerful compositions, encouraging you to look for shapes and colours that you may not have noticed and to consider using space in your work to create balance and harmony. She will showcase how she creates her calming colour schemes and demonstrate her method for starting a painting.

Session 2:

Experiment with painting figures and motifs in oils, and integrate these elements into your landscape painting. Enjoy exploring ideas for different compositions, while working with a simplified colour palette in your painting.

This course provides you with tools to explore what matters to you in the world. Go on to create your own paintings using the motifs you choose and strengthen your connection to your art practice.

In my approach to teaching oil painting, I hope to help people notice the often-overlooked details in their surroundings, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the world around them. I want to guide students in creating illustrative figures/boats/flowers etc and playing with their images, urging them to not be afraid of making their artwork uniquely their own. Together, we can explore the balance and harmony of colours, learning how to blend them seamlessly to achieve the desired effect. Most importantly, I aim to help each student find their own unique style, fostering their creativity and giving them confidence in their artistic journey.
