When artists talk about light, what do they mean? How does it work, and what does it say? Explore different concepts and methods of representing light in this 2 and a half hour recorded online course led by artist Kieran Stiles.
Learn simple and dynamic approaches to depicting light through the medium of oils. During this two and a half hour online session, Kieran places ideas and concepts in their historical context with practical demonstrations. He will refer to artists including Corot, Hopper, Michaelangelo, Morandi and Seurat. These artists have used light to bring solidity, contrast and focus to their paintings. Kieran will also demonstrate how he approaches these different concepts and methods of representation of light in his own work. This course will help you build confidence in representing light, and also the textural quality of the natural world.
Starting with preparatory drawings, you will focus on tonal values and mark-making. Drawing allows for a personal selection of visual moments to be captured with immediacy and vitality – a process which cannot be achieved by any other means. Kieran will guide you through the process of how to translate these drawings into oil paintings, and, through practical examples, you will see how these drawings inform and characterise your paintings.
