Course details

Join local artist, Gary Long, on location and in the studio as he shares his oil painting journey, from preparatory drawings, discussing colour mixing, layering, brush techniques to the creation of depth and dimension in his drawings and paintings of Pendeen Watch.

At the St Ives School of Painting, we are fortunate to have a team of practicing artists, all with different teaching styles, personal passions, and interests.

Each of these individual ‘Artist Landmark’ webinar episodes will focus on a different location and will capture the unique approach of one of our artists, responding to the local Cornish landscape.  We will get a glimpse into their artistic lives, an insight into what motivates them creatively, and learn about the methods that they hone to capture the essence of a place, both in the landscape and back in the studio.  As a result, these Landmark sessions will help you to build confidence in discovering your own artist landmarks and making work in response to these.

Gary Long, will be visiting Pendeen Watch, a lighthouse to the north of Pendeen in West Cornwall that was built in 1900, to guide vessels around the inhospitable shoreline from Pendeen to Gurnard’s Head. The lighthouse and dramatic coastal views have been an inspirational location for Gary over the years, looking out towards the Americas and the new world. The play of light casting shadows across the cliff tops is reminiscent of the use of strong shadows in Edward Hopper’s paintings, an artist that continues to inspire Gary.

Gary will be gathering plenty of original source material out in the landscape in Pendeen for the first part of the course. Watch him make linear pencil drawings, create charcoal tonal studies and create a colour study in gouache in the pre-recorded footage. Then have a go at the drawing and painting exercises yourself, following the instructions in the learning platform.

In the two sessions, streamed from our studios in St. Ives, Gary will be showing you his process of working up ideas from his preliminary sketches and gouache study into a textural painting of ‘Pendeen Watch’ in oils. All the lessons combined will give you beneficial tools to start building your own creative toolkit and help you to banish the fear of how to start a painting based on a sense of place.

What’s included:

Pre-recorded practical lessons, filmed on location, to watch before the live webinar.  The idea is that you can work through these preparatory exercises over a few days or a week (depending on your time commitments).

Reference images of the unique Cornish landscape that our tutors will be visiting. You can revisit these time and time again, to practice the techniques learned in the session.

Two studio sessions.  You can watch or work along with Gary, who will be bringing together the preliminary ideas from the pre-recorded footage, in practical sessions.

Session 1 – Recording available now (approx run time 1.5hrs)

Session 2 – Live broadcast, 10:30am, Saturday 12th October 2024 (approx run time 2hrs and includes the opportunity to pose questions).

Taught by

After many years as an illustrator I taught on the BA Illustration course at Falmouth University. In 2011 I began teaching at St Ives School of Painting. I deliver courses involved with the figure, still life and landscape. My practice as a painter feeds into the teaching, often through demonstrations. The school is wonderful – the history the ethos and most of all the people.

FAQs

Online Broadcast

Do I need a webcam/any equipment?

For our webinar sessions which are broadcast on the internet and no webcam or microphone is needed as you just need to be able to see/hear hosts and you can communicate using the chat function. You can watch using a PC, Smart TV or tablet. A phone isn’t ideal as you will struggle to see enough unless you can miracast to a screen or smart TV.

For the longer online courses on Zoom you will need a laptop or tablet with audio and camera enabled so you can have a screen near where you are working. If you have a PC without camera or speakers, you can purchase a plug and play webcam for approx £25 which connects to a usb port. You will also need reasonable broadband connection and speed.

All the art materials and equipment needed to participate in the course will be listed in full on the online learning platform, for live webinars this will be a minimum of two weeks before the session starts.
