Join Gary Long as he explores the distinctive mark-making of Austrian artist Egon Schiele. Recorded from our studio in St Ives with a model, you are invited to join in at home with guided exercises.

Working with a model, Gary will demonstrate how he approaches the figure, inspired by Schiele’s expressive drawing and painting technique. Gary will guide you through a series of exercises around mark-making and composition. By watching Gary at work, learn how he positions the figure on the paper, how to use simple, bold outlines, and when to add colour for dramatic effect.
Starting with 5 and 10 minute poses, these will be followed by longer poses to develop your drawings. You will have the option to introduce colour using gouache, watercolour or pastel.
Recorded in our studio overlooking Porthmeor Beach, you will draw alongside Gary, from the model. You will get a unique insight into how to produce loose, fluid, figurative sketches inspired by Schiele’s expressionistic style.
The screen will be split between the model and Gary’s canvas throughout the session so you can draw and paint along with Gary. Your view will be different due to how we position the cameras.

Please equip yourself with your favoured drawing materials eg charcoal, pencils, pastels and either your sketchbook or some large sheets of paper resting on a board.
