We’re so proud of the history and heritage that St Ives School of Painting holds.
Opened in 1938 by Borlase Smart & Leonard Fuller, the work that they, and several other artists achieved, is the reason we’re still here today. Today, we want to highlight the legacy of Leonard Fuller’s wife, Marjorie Mostyn RCA, who also played a huge part in setting up the school and most importantly kept it running following her husband’s death in 1973.
A painter in her own right, Mostyn attended the St John’s Wood School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in 1912. She also gained a British Institution Scholarship for painting in 1915. After the war, Mostyn and Fuller eventually settled in St Ives, Cornwall where together they ran St Ives School of Painting, welcoming the modernists such as Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham.
Following the death of Fuller, in 1977 Mostyn asked artist Roy Ray to take on the role of Principal; and working together, the partnership brought a new wave of contemporary painters to The School just as St Ives launched the now legendary September festival; staging lectures, films and exhibitions.
In that same year, regular Wednesday evening life drawing classes were introduced – a tradition which continues to this day, having become something of an institution.
We’re sharing some of Marjorie’s works of art and historic images - you can also read more about Marjorie’s influence and the history of our school on our website.
