Andrew Barrowman painting en plein air
Andrew Barrowman

Be inspired by the iconic cobbled streets and spectacular coastline of St Ives. On this one-day course, artist Andrew Barrowman will show you how to capture the uniqueness of St Ives using waterbased paints.

Gathering information on location through sketching, you will be taught in a small group. Andrew will show you techniques to increase your confidence and develop vital skills in a range of approaches. Returning to our historic studios, Andrew will show you how to transform these sketches into bold paintings using watercolour and gouache.

All your materials will be provided.

This is an ideal course if you are a beginner, or a more experienced artist looking to learn new techniques from an experienced plein air painter.

Following the one day course, there is an option for continuing independent work in the studio over the weekend for £40 a day. Just email [email protected] to book in for this rare experience to work in the famous Porthmeor Studios.

Landscape painting in Cornwall, Andrew Barrowman paints en plein air and in the studio using oils as his chosen medium. He tries to convey the feeling and atmosphere of a landscape onto canvas for the viewer to have an idea of what it was like to be there. His paintings often start with ideas found whilst walking his dog. He usually carries a small sketch book with him, making quick sketches and colour notes. These will sometimes be developed into paintings.
