Course details

Have you ever wanted to paint outside but unsure where to start? Delve into the practice of oil painting en plein air inspired by the remarkable Cornish landscape.

Rising in popularity during the nineteenth century, painting “en plein air” – in the open air, is a crucial practice for all landscape artists, from beginners to masters.

In this online class we leave the studio behind as we venture out on location with award winning artist Andrew Barrowman. Observe as he constructs a dramatic oil painting of the view from Hayle Towans, across the sea to St Ives Bay. Follow Andrew through his plein-air process from start to finish as he divulges the essential ingredients for achieving success while working outdoors.

Packed with invaluable information that Andrew has discovered first-hand through his extensive experience, this session gives you all the motivation and confidence you need to go out and give it a go. Watch as he generously shares practical tips and tricks that will help you tackle the challenges of nature, from the everchanging light to the unpredictable weather.

Starting off with the basics of how to find a good location and preparing and setting up your equipment,  Andrew then provides an in-depth narrative as he paints from the beach. Responding to the view, he explains the benefits of: direct observation and how this translates to accurate colour selection, and flexibility in terms of pace – reflecting the conditions you are working in, exploring the effect this has on the energy of a piece.

From the vast expanse of sand and sky to the tiny distant buildings of St Ives, Andrew dissects this complex vista and captures it using a series of easy to follow steps, giving you a recipe for plein-air success that you can use time again.

Landscape painting in Cornwall, Andrew Barrowman paints en plein air and in the studio using oils as his chosen medium. He tries to convey the feeling and atmosphere of a landscape onto canvas for the viewer to have an idea of what it was like to be there. His paintings often start with ideas found whilst walking his dog. He usually carries a small sketch book with him, making quick sketches and colour notes. These will sometimes be developed into paintings.
