Course details

Discover how tonal drawing can transform the way you paint in this focused drawing workshop designed to support and strengthen your painting practice.

pencil drawing by Emily Roberts

In this three-hour workshop, Emily will guide students through the foundations of tonal drawing using a range of black and white materials, including charcoal and graphite.

Working from a carefully arranged still life, participants will learn how to observe tone, light and shadow more closely. The relationships between each object and the space around it will be explored, helping participants to recognise rhythm and flow within contour and form.

By focusing on tonal relationships and observational drawing, students will also gain a stronger understanding of composition, contrast and form — valuable skills that can bring greater confidence and sensitivity to their painting practice. Through guided exercises and demonstrations, the workshop will explore both careful observation and more intuitive ways of working.

Suitable for painters and drawers of all levels, this workshop offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen observational skills, loosen up mark-making, and develop confidence in using tonal contrast within creative practice, helping students to create drawings with greater depth, atmosphere and structure.

My approach to teaching is one of mutual discovery. Firmly grounded in the atelier tradition, I always work alongside the student in order to guide and move through obstacles together. The basis of the method I use is very step by step, offering guidance to those with less experience, but allows for the personal expression and touch of the individual to shine through.
