Join us for this two hour online figure class inspired by artist Edward Hopper. Recorded from our studio in St Ives with a clothed model.

Edward Hopper’s cinematic paintings have long inspired artists. Eerie in their stillness, the figures in Hopper’s paintings are rarely represented in their own homes. Instead, they pass time in movie theatres, hotels, restaurants.

In this edition of ‘Figure’, we recreate the scenes of some of Hopper’s paintings live in our Porthmeor Studios. Working from a clothed model, artist Gary Long demonstrates how Hopper achieved his signature style. Working in pencil and gouache, see how to situate a figure in a scene or narrative. Learn how to compose your own successful Hopper-inspired image.

These sessions are designed to inspire, instruct and surprise. Suitable for any level of experience. Each one will be run slightly differently depending on the artist leading it.

You will see both the model and Gary as he works along with you.

What to bring.

In this session Gary will start off drawing in dark 6B pencil. He will move on to using gouache in white and black and then use gouache to add blocks of colour. Watercolour or acrylic can be used instead of gouache when moving into colour. Work on cartridge paper with a drawing board or sketch book. Have with you a rubber and sharpener, your drawing and painting materials with lots of water on hand.

Taught by

After many years as an illustrator I taught on the BA Illustration course at Falmouth University. In 2011 I began teaching at St Ives School of Painting. I deliver courses involved with the figure, still life and landscape. My practice as a painter feeds into the teaching, often through demonstrations. The school is wonderful – the history the ethos and most of all the people.
