Course details

Explore the process of creating art inspired by the sun and the moon through techniques guided by abstraction, surrealism and symbolism.

Greg Humphries - abstract painting

Artist, Greg Humphries, will introduce you to the theories and techniques of abstraction, symbolism and surrealism within the realm of art. Both sessions will include a brief, guided meditation intended to align you with the energy of the sun or moon prior to delving into the analysis of how other artists have depicted these celestial bodies in their work.

You will study works by artists such as Ithell Colquhoun, Pamela Colman-Smith, Joan Miro and Piet Mondrian and engage in drawing and painting exercises to further enhance your connection with the Sun and Moon. Explore ideas through guided drawing and water-based painting exercises. Then learn how to bring these ideas together to create an abstract painting evoking the feelings associated with The Sun and The Moon.

Greg will explore how colour influences emotions and reactions to the Sun and Moon, aiding in the creation of paintings that convey visual, emotional, and spiritual elements.

Students will be able to go on to use the techniques learnt in these live sessions to explore other subject areas in their future art practices.

Who is this course for?

This course would suit students seeking inspiration through learning new techniques for developing a painting, whether stuck in their own practice or aiming to advance further in their artistic journey.

It would also suit students who wish to paint in a more abstract way to evoke the feelings associated with The Sun and The Moon.

What will I learn?

1. An understanding of abstraction, symbolism and surrealist techniques and ideas, and how they can be employed to create artwork

2. Methods to analyse your artwork or that of another artist

3. How to apply colour to produce different emotions and develop colour palettes

4. How artists in the past have dealt with the subject of the sun and moon

5. How to connect more deeply with the sun and moon, and move beyond an illusionistic representation of them in painting.

How does an online session work?

We record the sessions so you can watch on demand, as often as you like, for up to 90 days after purchase. This way you can pause a scene, rewind and finish your painting.

You will be invited to join our Facebook Alumni group so you can share your discoveries with fellow students from around the world. You can also share your work live with others on social media using the #schoolofpainting and tagging us @stives painting

You can watch on a PC, laptop or tablet and if you have chromecast or miracast you could even cast to your SmartTV from your phone.

I try to connect people to their environment with my art. I started out as a landscape painter, but it was only through undertaking a masters degree in 2009 that I realised the best way to connect people to their environment was to take them into that environment and get them to make the art!
