Course details

Explore the calligraphic mark making of Joan Eardley and learn how as artists today we can find inspiration for our own painting.

Joan Eardley ; Two Children; Glasgow Museums;

Join artist Jill Eisele for two sessions, each lasting an hour, to explore the mark making of painter Joan Eardley. With a focus on her work produced in Glasgow and her fascination with the calligraphy of the city; its graffiti, street signs, the people and particularly the children.

Delve into Eardley’s fascination with the use of text and collage to capture the essence of people and place. Learn how as artists today we can be inspired by Eardley’s approach, how to embrace the rich space between realism and abstraction, and a playfulness with text, collage and figures.

A great session if you would like to learn more about Joan Eardley from an artist’s perspective. Learn more about the process she used around mark making that you can use to inform your own practice.

My practice begins with drawing, often taking me to wild and wonderful parts of Cornwall, capturing fleeting moments where light and colour create atmosphere and expression. These underpin my largely figurative paintings, which convey a sense of incompleteness; of place and mystery.
