This workshop with Emma Saffy Wilson invites young artists to explore how everyday objects can be transformed through attention, arrangement and context.

Inspired by Saffy’s work and Joseph Cornell’s memory boxes, participants will construct a personal assemblage. Young people will work with clay to make miniature sculptural elements and use found materials to create vessels, plinths and forms. They’ll investigate ideas of balance, placement and relationship, considering how meaning shifts through display.
The session encourages a slower, more reflective approach to making, drawing on themes of ritual, observation and the overlooked. Using recycled and repurposed materials from St Ives School of Painting, it also introduces an awareness of material value and creative reuse.
Participants are welcome to bring a small object of personal significance to incorporate into their work, though this is entirely optional.
For young artists aged 11-16, this group helps young people connect with their creativity and get to know contemporary art practices.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Thanks to generous support from our fee paying families and St Ives Rotary, we are able to offer up to 4 scholarship places per session awarded on a need basis. If you are on a low income please contact [email protected] for an application form to apply for a free scholarship place.

Meet Your Tutor

Emma Saffy Wilson
Saffy studied Multi Media at Plymouth College of Arts and Studio Ceramics at Falmouth. She is intrigued by natural raw materials and has been exploring soil and mould in her practice, looking at context and how that changes the ‘value’ of artworks, aswell as traditional Japanese printing techniques.
She has worked as a freelance community artist since graduating in 2000, delivering arts projects in a variety of settings, from galleries and colleges to more community-based settings. She enjoys working with her groups at Carefree and Trelya to encourage disengaged young people who would not normally engage with the arts to develop their creative skills.
Safeguarding
