Caroline Robinson - online abstract oil painting course

Approaching Intuitive Painting

Acrylic / Oil / Abstract

Book Selected Date

Course details

Join large-scale painter Caroline Robinson as she explores her practice of painting intuitively.

Have you ever wondered how artists paint intuitively?  Where do the ideas come from for a painting, how do you interpret those ideas onto canvas? What colours do you use to convey your feelings? Learn how to tap into inspiration from physical experiences and places familiar to you. See how to make those first marks, use colour to express emotion and learn to let go and have fun!

Caroline will encourage you to be brave, go big and explore mark making on a larger scale. (She will be working on surfaces that are A1 plus, when we say ‘go big’ this could mean scaling up from A5 to A3 or you could go much much bigger. The principals that she teaches during this webinar will still apply).

Looking at artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell and Monet, this webinar will be fun and explorative and will help to give you the confidence to paint what you feel. You will work with either acrylics or oil paints and Caroline demonstrates that there is not one ‘correct’ way of painting and encourages a freer way of working.

Joan Mitchell once said, ‘My paintings repeat a feeling about Lake Michigan, or water, or fields… it’s more like a poem… and that’s what I want to paint’.

Taking Mitchell’s approach to intuitive painting, see how this style of painting offers a fresh approach to your painting practice. For this webinar, we recommend that you sit back, relax and enjoy watching Caroline guide you, live from our historic studios in St. Ives. Then, in your own time you can explore the techniques learnt in the session and re-visit the recording for inspiration.

View Caroline’s Work

As a large-scale intuitive painter, I am often greeted with comments of admiration for the confidence to approach a large canvas, and being free enough to create at that scale. There is huge joy in creating immersive work and I hope I can pass on some of my experiences and knowledge I have gained to others and inspire more confidence in trusting your intuitions.

What to Bring

A list of materials will be available to see in your account at least four weeks in advance of the live class. If there are any pre-course tasks to complete before the session they can be found here too.

You will need access to the internet and ideally a PC, laptop or a tablet with audio. Phones are not really suitable to watch a webinar on, unless you can cast to your Smart TV, as the presenter will be hard to see when they share their screen with you .
