Enjoy capturing the human figure in an experimental and explorative way in this online webinar inspired by Antony Gormley’s drawings of the human form. Led by artist Ilker Cinarel, see how using a range of materials and techniques can create fresh perspectives to depicting the body.

Famous for his life-size sculptural casts of the human figure, Gormley is less well-known for his drawings and paintings of the same subject. In these drawings, Gormley describes the body from both inside and outside, using non-idealised and universal forms alive with energy, and exploring the body through physical and spiritual experiences of what it is like to be human.

Using these drawings and ideas as a starting point, Ilker will show you how to create exciting images inspired by Gormley’s expressive drawings. See how to build effective compositions by combining observation and intuition, and how experimenting with mark-making can offer new ways to capturing the human figure.

Starting with some shorter, experimental sketches, working from a model, see how to build line, form and texture through mark-making exercises and a variety of materials. Build the human form through dots, splashes, spirals and ‘constellations’, and explore drawing the figure through a more ‘holistic’ approach; seeing how we engage with the figure through observation, feeling, connection and memory can offer an exciting, expressive way of making images.
