Course details
Learn how to capture twilight in oils, where fading light and the rich colour of the sea and the sky can naturally lead you into abstraction.
Let Tom tell you more in this short film

Recorded on the winter solstice join us for a special few hours of painting with artist Tom Rickman. Transport yourself to our Porthmeor Studio as Tom takes you through his process of capturing the transient moment of dusk when the sun goes down on the shortest day of the year. When the fading light can for a moment amplify colours and the landscape starts to naturally lend itself to abstraction and intuition.
This is an opportunity to watch an artist to develop a painting from scratch. Watch Tom set out his painting, create the composition and explore tone and colour palette. He will share with you his approach to following the rules of painting but also when to trust intuition. Learn about the practicalities of mixing colours, removing and repainting but also the challenges of being both critical and kind to yourself. Finally he will explore how to keep a painting fresh and not overwork and even keep it in state of flux.
What will I learn?
