Emerging Artists Bursary

LEARN FROM PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS
In partnership with the Roy Ray Legacy Fund, the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, and Little Parc Owles Trust, an exciting opportunity to study at St Ives School of Painting with a bursary is now available.
We are looking to enable 19-25 year old Emerging Artists, living in Cornwall to access our studio courses with an 80% bursary. Could we support your art practice?
How does it work
The Emerging Artists Bursary is aimed at young creatives taking their first steps into professional art practice. We would like to hear from 19-25 year old emerging artists living in Cornwall, who would benefit from additional expert tuition from professional artists. Successful applicants will be able to choose a 3 or 4 day art course of their choice at the historic St Ives School of Painting, and 80% of the fee will be covered by the bursary, up to a maximum of £340.
This has been made possible from funds supplied by the Roy Ray Legacy Fund, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, Little Parc Owles Trust, and charitable donations from students at the St Ives School of Painting.
Applicant Criteria
Applicants must be aged 19-25 and currently live in Cornwall, a proof of address will be required.
You must have an active visual art practice, be able to evidence a serious approach to your work and be aiming to develop a career in the Creative Arts.
Applications will be considered by the panel at St Ives School of Painting; decisions are final.
How to Apply
If you meet the applicant criteria, you can apply for the bursary by completing this online application and uploading a selection of your artwork. Funding is limited so not every application will be successful.
Your application will go under review and upon acceptance, you will be able to choose from a range of courses.
This bursary has a rolling deadline, the opportunity remains open until all funding is spent.

More about our funders
Roy Ray, principal of St Ives School of Painting for thirty-five years who sadly passed away in May 2021, helped us launch a new fund, The Roy Ray Legacy Fund. His ambition was to leave a legacy that would enable the School to support an age group he believes needs a helping hand, so they can pursue the dream of being an artist, even if the odds can seem stacked against them.
Since launching, The Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust and Little Parc Owles Trust have granted match funding for our Emerging Artists Bursary Scheme, tripling the amount from Roy’s Legacy Fund, enabling us to reach more aspiring artists across Cornwall.
The Roy Ray Legacy Fund
Roy Ray attended St Ives School of Painting as a student in the 1960s and was fundamental in its success from the late 1970s to early 2000s. As Principal, he introduced more contemporary courses and welcomed even more visitors to the St Ives art community.
For Roy, coming to St Ives School of Painting many years ago as a student gave him the courage and inspiration to radically change his life and put art at its centre. This fund will help young people to keep that creative light burning.

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust
Esteemed St Ives based Scottish artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, was a huge part of the St Ives modernist history. Throughout her long career, Barns’ Graham shared Roy Ray’s passion to support emerging artists.
Having benefitted from bursaries throughout her studies, Barns-Graham set up a Trust at the end of her life, so that her legacy could support individuals to fulfil their potential. The Trust has been supporting people in their art studies since 1987.

Little Parc Owles Trust
Based in St Ives, Little Parc Owles Trust provides funding to local organisations that provide education in the practice and history of the fine and applied arts in Cornwall.
