Course details
The third term of art club explores landscape, taking inspiration wherever you are, urban or rural, a view from your window, an imaginary place or memory.

Led by two tutors with distinct but complementary practices, participants will be encouraged to work in different ways. Iona works in a loose, instinctive way, bringing focus to composition and intuitive colour expression, while Camilla introduces a more abstract approach, guiding participants to experiment with colour, form, and mark-making to create expressive, interpretive compositions.
In the first two landscape sessions, we will explore the emotional connections we have with the landscape around us. Iona will guide you through note-taking, mark-making and quick sketching to help develop a personal response to place. Through painting, she will encourage you to look more deeply at what draws you in. Is it colour, atmosphere, pattern, shape, texture or perspective? We will use these discoveries to inspire your work.
Camilla focuses on the value of making a drawing every day, using a series of short exercises across a variety of media to encourage observation, experimentation and confidence. The last session of this series is a homage to David Hockney, after the recent sad passing of David Hockney. Iona delivers an interesting session based on his approach to paintings. You will be making quick sketches and paintings using vibrant colour and expressive mark making and experimenting with some of the techniques and ideas that characterise Hockney’s work.
Each session is designed to be fun and relaxed, giving you the chance to switch off, unwind, and enjoy dedicated time for your creativity—something you can dive into and stay inspired by. Within the sessions there will be warm-up exercises and gentle direction to ease you in. Draw and paint in real time alongside the tutor, using inspiration from your own surroundings or the same reference materials they provide. We’ll wrap up each session by looking at the work of other artists, such as David Hockney, Wilhelmina Barns Graham, Patrick Heron, Barbara Rae and Milton Avery to spark ideas and deepen your learning.
You’ll also have the opportunity to share your work on our Facebook page and connect with fellow participants, helping you build confidence and feel part of a supportive creative community.
