Following Martha’s hugely successful first webinar with us, we welcome her back to explore a rich Autumnal palette. Delve into abstract expressionism to create a landscape painting in oils with this two-part recording.  

Having previously focussed on the shimmering whites and bright blues around Porthmeor Beach in St Ives, in this session, Martha will paint from the rugged coastline of Zennor in the Penwith area of West Cornwall. Her palette will reflect the light and colours of this season – verdant greens and  rusty tones. 

Working towards one complete painting in oil, while developing a wider understanding into abstraction and colour field work, this online recording explores themes such as Abstract Expressionism and Colour Field painting, looking to artists including Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still, and St Ives artists such as Patrick Heron and Sandra Blow.   

Whatever your level of experience you will enjoy learning how to use colour to create an abstract landscape and if you joined us first time around you will enjoy further developing your skills, whilst depicting a different scene. 

Session 1: 

The overall focus for session 1 will be to repeatedly use a limited colour palette, simplified form studying the landscape, to form small abstract studies of different sections of the landscape. Working on a smaller sale will allow us to produce a complete series of studies from which to work from in session 2.  

Session 2: 

Session 2 will take ideas and thoughts practised in session 1 and upscale them. Referencing the small studies produced in session 1, you will use the same techniques to understand the landscape of Zennor through simplifying forms and using colour.
