Joan Eardley- The Calligraphy of People + Place
Jill Eisele
Explore the calligraphic mark making of Joan Eardley and learn how as artists today we can find inspiration for our own painting.
Use bold outlines, shape and shadow to create dramatic effect inspired by poses from classic cinema.
Taking the iconic images from the film Metropolis as a starting point, we invite you for a cosy session of classic cinema-inspired life drawing. Working live from a back-lit model, Tom will demonstrate how to capture shape and shadow.
Draw-along with Tom from the comfort of your own home as he guides you through a series of exercises aimed to inspire an alternative technique at capturing the figure. See how changing the angle of the light source can create abstract shapes and shadows as they cast against the walls of our St Ives studios. By watching Tom at work, learn how to use simple, bold outlines and shade for dramatic effect.
Starting with 5 and 10 minute poses, these will be followed by longer poses to develop your drawings. You will have the option to introduce colour using gouache, watercolour or pastel.
Recorded in our studio overlooking Porthmeor Beach, you will draw alongside Tom, from the clothed model. Get a unique insight into how to work with shape and shadow as well as outline and form.
The screen will be split between the model and Tom’s paper throughout the session so you can draw and paint along with Tom. Your view will be different due to how we position the cameras.
Beginners and those with more experience are both welcome to join. If you are looking to learn new ways to expand your drawing and painting practice, this course is for you.
