Course details

Have you always wanted to try painting with oils but not sure where to start, which materials to buy and what to paint? In this short course artist Steven Buckler will help you to de-mystify the art of oil painting.

Oil paints can be a bit daunting to the inexperienced or amateur artist.  Perhaps because we only see them when we visit galleries and museums, they have a seriousness about them; they are the mysterious medium of the old master and the professional artist.

This workshop with Artist Steven Buckler will dispel any misconceptions you may have and will equip you with the knowledge and confidence you need to start using them.

Starting with various application techniques and progressing onto some simple observational painting, you will learn about the different attributes of this versatile medium.  If the weather permits, you will be able to take a stroll along Porthmeor beach and sketch the beautiful coastal scenery.  Back in the studio, use your sketches and oil paints to explore the possibilities of this versatile medium under the guidance of experienced artist Steven Buckler.

Offered as either a half-day introduction or a full-day experience, the longer format allows for more in-depth exploration, extended painting time and more individual guidance to develop your work.

Please note: This is an adult workshop, however we would welcome children aged 14 or over, if accompanied by a paying adult. This is the case as we cannot guarantee that all our tutors have been DBS checked.

My work is about more than the landscape, it’s about the sense of being in it. The atmosphere, the light and the colour. For me it is about drawing and painting these bits of our landscape that are normally edited out of our perception and experience.
