Martha Joins us as a guest artist online to coincide with her sell out show at St Ives New Craftsman Gallery in June 2021. Her approach to teaching is to simply share her love and growing energy for her practice as a landscape painter.
Since graduating from Falmouth University 3 years ago, Martha paints from her studio at Morgans in Falmouth alongside working outside on the coast, especially the Penwith coastline.
Inspired by the Cornish masters – Heron, Hepworth, Nicholson, Scott, Bray – Martha’s works in oil immerse the viewer in an emotional dialect, born from a deep-rooted connection to the landscape that has always surrounded her.
Abstract in form, often with large flat areas of colour, Martha’s work captures a raw and honest sense of the landscape – her own experience communicated through colour and expressive mark making. Visit her artist website to find out more about her practice, MarthaHolmes.com.
What our students say
Martha Holmes is wonderful about demystifying painting and giving confidence to the student.
“Your online course was one of the big benefits in the lockdown, Martha is a excellent and clear teacher.”
Martha covered so much, but in a straightforward and accessible way, with loads of helpful detail about techniques and materials. This was my first experience of St Ives School of Painting, but I definitely will be back for more.
