Competition Time

To celebrate the opening of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s major retrospective at Tate St Ives this October, we’re offering one person a place on our upcoming course, Landscape to Abstraction inspired by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, taught by artist Kitty Hillier.

Taking place in our studios from 30 Oct – 1 Nov, this three-day course draws inspiration from Barns-Graham’s studies of the Cornish sea, rocks and coastline.

To enter, complete the short form below before Wednesday 9 September.

Coming Soon: The Turning Point

The Turning Point for St Ives School of Painting is a new short film exploring a pivotal period in the School’s history. Through archive material and the memories of those who were there, it tells the story of how the School survived an uncertain chapter, renewed its purpose and laid the foundations for the creative community it is today.

Join us for a free screening at Porthmeor Studios during the St Ives September Festival. The film will be shown on the hour, every hour from 10am-4pm on Wednesday 23 September, with no booking required.

St Ives September Festival

In just over two weeks, St Ives September Festival returns, bringing together live music, talks, exhibitions, open studios and creative workshops across St Ives.

As part of the Festival, we’ll be running short art workshops every weekday from Monday 14 September. A few places are still available – take a look below to discover what’s coming up and book your place.

We’re pleased to share an upcoming exhibition by four alumni of our 2023 Porthmeor Programme: Marie Calvert, Wendy Rylance, Janie Cameron and Jenny Hannam.

The exhibition brings together four different perspectives, united by a shared connection to St Ives. Everyone is welcome to attend.

This Month’s Watch

As we look back over a busy August in the studios, this short tutorial offers a way to carry that creative momentum into the months ahead.

Keeping an art journal gives you somewhere to test ideas and record the colours that catch your attention – without the pressure of creating a finished piece. In this video, discover how to make colour swatches in your journal, building a useful reference for future paintings while exploring new and unexpected colours.
