Course details

A playful and process-led workshop exploring the possibilities of mixed media painting through drawing, composition and mark-making.

Flower painting by Emma McClure for Summer workshops, St Ives School of Painting

In this workshop we will be using real-life floral forms as a springboard to explore shape, structure and composition. Through guided drawing exercises, you’ll develop studies that will form the foundation of your painting.

We will look at how to take those drawings and develop them into structured, personal compositions, moving beyond direct representation and into expressive interpretation. Along the way, you’ll be encouraged to experiment freely with a range of materials including acrylic paints, coloured pencils, crayons, chalks, and collage.

This workshop is designed to open up your creative process and help you discover the range of marks, textures, and effects achievable when combining different media.

Please note: This is an adult workshop, however we would welcome children aged 14 or over, if accompanied by a paying adult. This is the case as we cannot guarantee that all our tutors have been DBS checked.

Teaching at the historic St Ives School of Painting offers me the
opportunity to share my enthusiasm for painting and to pass on
some of the knowledge I have gained through many years of
practice as a painter. I share my own approach to painting and I
aim to support each student in developing their own work, with
an emphasis on colour, experimentation, and simplification
