Join us for the second part in this online figure class inspired by the work of artist Henri Matisse. Extending from the last session, this time we’ll be adding rich colour to Matisse’s lively compostions.

Following from Alice’s first Matisse-inspired webinar, artist Alice Mumford will show you how to add colour to the rich patterned surface’s we explored in the first version. Using pen, stick or brush to explore patterns and mark-making, learn how Matisse created rich, lively drawings embracing the fabric of the model’s clothes and the patterned interior backdrops. Then, using a range of materials and mediums, add colour to your drawings and add even more vibrancy to your compositions. This is the second of two sessions focusing on Matisse. Ideal if you’ve already attended the first session but not essential either!

Working from a clothed model in our Porthmeor Studios, this will be a fun and experimental session. Inspired by Matisse’s paintings, we will set up a vibrant backdrop full of pattern and colour for you to work from. the first fifteen minutes will be spent using stick and inks to draw, followed by another 15 minutes doing the same. This will be followed by 1 hour of drawing in charcoal and then going into colour and then another final session doing this again for half an hour.

You will see both the model and Alice as she works along with you. You won’t be seen or heard in the session but you can ask questions using the chat function. Share your work live with others on social media using the #SaturdayLifeLive and #schoolofpainting

“The school of painting is an oasis; a place to share ideas, enthusiasm and adventures into painting. Teaching has helped me to translate my thoughts and reflections about art into practical courses. In doing this I have learnt so much and shared in that adventure. It’s an opportunity to pass on the wonderful sense of being part of a bigger ‘family’ of painters.”

What to Bring

Charcoal, pastels, oil bars, gouache and acrylics in a variety of colours including white, cartridge paper and brushes. We will send a materials list on booking.

You will need access to the internet and ideally a Smart TV, PC or laptop or a tablet with audio. Phones are less suitable due to the small screen size but certainly possible.

Timings and Breaks

We will start at 10.30 am and work for 2 hours. We will pause for questions at different points during the session you can pose any questions to the artist using the chat function.

FAQs

Online Broadcast

Do I need a webcam/any equipment?

For our webinar sessions which are broadcast on the internet and no webcam or microphone is needed as you just need to be able to see/hear hosts and you can communicate using the chat function. You can watch using a PC, Smart TV or tablet. A phone isn’t ideal as you will struggle to see enough unless you can miracast to a screen or smart TV.

For the longer online courses on Zoom you will need a laptop or tablet with audio and camera enabled so you can have a screen near where you are working. If you have a PC without camera or speakers, you can purchase a plug and play webcam for approx £25 which connects to a usb port. You will also need reasonable broadband connection and speed.

All the art materials and equipment needed to participate in the course will be listed in full on the online learning platform, for live webinars this will be a minimum of two weeks before the session starts.
