Course details
Slow down and explore the timeless practice of still life oil painting and develop a deeper understanding of light, tone and atmosphere.

Join artist Emily Roberts for a focused three-hour workshop exploring the foundations of traditional still life oil painting. Working from a carefully arranged still life, students will be encouraged to slow down and look closely, developing a deeper understanding of shape, tone, proportion and colour.
Drawing inspiration from the techniques of the 17th Century masters, Emily will guide participants through key observational painting skills, including tonal simplification, measuring relationships between objects, edge handling and confident brushwork. Through demonstrations and individual guidance, students will explore how light, shadow and colour work together to create depth and atmosphere within a painting.
Using a limited palette and direct observation, this workshop offers an accessible introduction to classical oil painting methods, with a focus on careful observation, tonal relationships and confident brushwork.
This workshop may particularly appeal to students with some previous experience of oil painting who are looking to strengthen their observational skills and develop greater confidence in their approach to painting from life.
