Course details

Join us for this energetic webinar led by new tutor Alex Yarlett exploring capturing the atmosphere, emotions and feelings of a place.

Alex Yarlett

How do you convey the emotion of a place or landscape in a painting? How do you start a painting, and when is a painting finished? In this playful and experimental webinar, artist Alex Yarlett shows you how to capture familiar, or far-off, landscapes.

Alex will talk you through how he gathers information from the landscape to help inform his art practise back in the studio. Working from local footage depicting a view across Porthmeor Beach in St. Ives, he will be showing you some quick sketching, note making and his approach to starting a painting using both oil and acrylic paint. Exploring what to leave in and what to take out, Alex demonstrates how intuition plays a big part in these initial processes.

Stressing the importance of working on multiple pieces, Alex uses the ten-to-one rule – for every masterpiece, there are ten ‘attempts’. Learning to let go and avoid being too precious about one single work, this webinar is ideal if you are looking for a fresh approach to capturing the landscapes around you in a more abstract way. By pausing and reflecting on your painting as you go, Alex will encourage you to loosen your approach to image making.

Alex will guide you, recorded live from our historic studios in St Ives, but you can join us wherever you are in the world.
