Work alongside watercolour artist David Webb as he guides you live from our historic studios in St Ives. During this webinar you will respond to high quality footage of the local seascape as David breaks down the complex discipline of watercolour into clear, easy to follow, practical demonstrations.

Learn to observe a scene with an artist’s eye and how to select the essential elements for a successful composition. Understand how to make informed colour choices and which brushes to use and why. Exploring effective techniques such as wet-into-wet, wet-on-dry and dry brush, David will explain how to asses and apply tonal value to create impact and depth in a watercolour piece.

Integrating these elements into your work, you will capture the motion of the water, brilliance of sunlight and concentration of deep shadow. Working in limited layers, you will achieve a translucent and fluid style enabling you to maintain freshness. Who is this course for?

This webinar is suitable for both beginners and improvers.  Some experience with the watercolour medium would be an advantage but not a necessity, as each stage will be demonstrated, and the techniques explained.  The webinar would be suitable for anyone with an interest in watercolour, and watercolour painting.

1. Simple rules about composition

2. How to build up a watercolour painting from light to dark, using three transparent washes

3. How to dilute watercolour paint to the correct tonal value

4. How to mix colours on the paper

5. Useful techniques such as wet-into-wet, wet-on-dry and dry-brush

How does an online session work?

We record the sessions so you can watch on demand, as often as you like, for up to 60 days after purchase. This way you can pause a scene, rewind and finish your painting.

You will be invited to join our Facebook Alumni group so you can share your discoveries with fellow students from around the world. You can also share your work live with others on social media using the #schoolofpainting and tagging us @stives painting

You can watch on a PC, laptop or tablet and if you have chromecast or miracast you could even cast to your SmartTV from your phone.

My teaching involves drawing, composition, understanding the importance of tonal values and the techniques required to paint successfully with watercolour. As its name implies, watercolour is a very fluid medium. It is transparent and relies on the whiteness of the paper to shine through a series of washes built up from light to dark.
