November Features
Emerging Artist’s Bursary Extended
Earlier this year we launched our bursary scheme for young creatives living or working in Cornwall, taking their first steps into professional art practice.
We are now thrilled to share that thanks to our incredible funders, The Roy Ray Legacy Fund, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, and Little Parc Owles Trust – we are now able to open the bursary up even wider to reach 19-35 year olds.
Successful applicants will be able to choose a 3 or 4 day art course of their choice, and 80% of the fee will be covered by the bursary, up to a maximum of £340.
New Online Series with Alice Mumford
In this new series, coming soon, join Alice Mumford as she uncovers how the shifting relationship between light, space and our point of view transforms the colours we perceive.
Alice will talk you through a number of painting demonstrations, where she will be using everyday subjects arranged near a window – explaining her process and observations as she works.

This Month’s Watch
When a creative block strikes, it often helps to turn to activities that awaken your imagination. Sometimes it could help to explore different forms of art.
Or it could be as simple as dipping into these short excerpts from our tutors – a small spark that sets your ideas flowing again.

This Month’s Read
At St Ives School of Painting, we believe art is for everyone. Kate Bryan’s How to Art shares the same spirit – warm, down-to-earth, and full of ways to take art on your own terms – from where it is to what it is, how to own it, how to make it – and how to make a career out of it.
We were thrilled to be mentioned in the book, inviting readers to join workshops or courses. Here are the key takeaways that every artist, beginner or experienced, can carry with them.

The Health Benefits of Life Drawing
Life drawing has slipped in and out of vogue in recent decades, but as public attention shifts to the importance of mental health and wellbeing, it is enjoying something of a resurgence. A recent study by the BBC and Newcastle University compared memory and cognition in a group of 30 adults: they asked 10 to walk briskly, 10 to do puzzles such as crosswords and sudoku and 10 to attend life drawing classes. The experiment took place over 8 weeks, with a series of tests carried out across the volunteers at the beginning of the study and at the end. The life drawers, it turned out, showed significant improvement in memory and cognitive function following the experiment.
