A Journey of Resilience: 'The Salt Path' to Hit UK Cinemas

In the News

This spring, audiences will be moved by The Salt Path, a poignant adaptation of Raynor Winn’s bestselling memoir. Set to release in UK cinemas on 30 May 2025, the film chronicles the transformative 630-mile trek along the South West Coast Path undertaken by Raynor and her husband, Moth, after losing their home and grappling with a terminal illness diagnosis

A Story of Love, Loss, and Renewal

Directed by acclaimed theatre director Marianne Elliott and scripted by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, The Salt Path stars Gillian Anderson as Raynor and Jason Isaacs as Moth. ‘Their performances have been lauded for their authenticity and emotional depth, capturing the couple’s physical and emotional journey with subtlety and grace.’ (Gazettely)

The narrative delves into the couple’s decision to walk the South West Coast Path, from Minehead to Poole, armed with only a tent and minimal supplies. This journey becomes a testament to their resilience, love, and the healing power of nature.

A Tribute to Human Spirit and Advocacy

Beyond its cinematic achievements, The Salt Path sheds light on Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), the rare neurological condition affecting Moth. Director Marianne Elliott collaborated with the PSP Association to ensure an accurate portrayal of the disease, emphasising the film’s commitment to raising awareness about lesser-known health conditions.

Raynor Winn, now an ambassador for the South West Coast Path charity, continues to advocate for the preservation and accessibility of the trail, underscoring the path’s significance as a source of solace and transformation.

Capturing the Rugged Beauty of the Coast

Filmed on location across Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset, the film showcases the stunning yet challenging landscapes of our beloved National Trail. Locations in Cornwall such as Holywell Bay, Fistral Beach in Newquay, Padstow, and Lands End provide a vivid backdrop to the couple’s journey.

The South West Coast Path offers so much inspiration for so many around the world, especially painters and artists who use it’s vibrancy, ruggedness and beauty to influence their work. You can be transported to the coast path via our new online course, ‘Painting the Cornish Coast‘ where you will learn from three professional artists, each offering their different approaches to capturing the essence of place through demonstrations and self-paced exercises.

Mark your calendars!

The Salt Path is more than a tale of adversity; it’s an exploration of the human capacity for endurance, connection, and renewal. With its heartfelt performances and breathtaking scenery, the film invites viewers to reflect on the paths we choose when faced with life’s most challenging moments.

Mark your calendars for 30 May 2025, and prepare to be inspired by this remarkable journey of love and resilience.
