Born #onthisday in 1912, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham

Born in St Andrews, Fife, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was determined to follow her dreams of becoming an artist by the time she was in senior school, and through this determination and support from her aunt, in 1931 she attended Edinburgh College of Art.

She arrived in St Ives in 1940 and from then her history is bound up with the School of St Ives, where she retained a studio for the rest of her life.

Wilhelmina left an incredible legacy in St Ives, and through the @barnsgraham Trust, helping to support individuals to fulfil their potential. We are forever grateful for the support we receive to help fund our 19-25 year old Emerging Artists Bursary, aimed at young creatives taking their first steps into professional art practice.

Meet artist & tutor, Emily Roberts 👩‍🎨

One of our newest artist tutors, Roberts trained at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence before moving to Margate, then to Cornwall where she is currently based.

Emily specialises in working from life and imagination, using traditional methods within a contemporary experience, bridging the void between the visual tradition and the modern psyche.

"My approach to teaching is one of mutual discovery. Firmly grounded in the atelier tradition, I always work alongside students, in order to guide and move through obstacles together." - Roberts

St Ives September Festival 🥁

Children’s Summer Workshops ☀️

This summer, let the kids dive into a world of colour, creativity and imagination with our two & half hour workshops. From coastal collages to playful print, 7-13 year olds can join us in the studio every Friday throughout the summer holidays.

Plus, this year we are running sessions especially for locals! If you live in Cornwall and can provide a proof of address, children can join us on a Friday afternoon with a locals discount. This is being kindly funded by Little Parc Owles Trust 🩵

"Finding Trewyn Studio was a sort of magic" Barbara Hepworth 💫

Discover the studio, yard and garden where Hepworth once lived and worked, and take the time to sketch the impressive sculptures set amongst leafy green foliage.

Tutor @hilaryjeangibson.illustrator will guide you through the historic garden before you head back to Porthmeor Studios to build on your sketches, using mixed media and watercolour!

This weekend @stivesfoodfest 🌞

Join us on Porthminster Beach for a special workshop led by artist, Victoria Gillow.

Victoria will guide you in creating your own Cornish version of Matisse’s still life, where simple planes of colour, shape and pattern come together. All materials are provided so just turn up and create your very own Cornish Riviera still life painting to take away!

Booking in advance is recommended but we will try to accommodate anyone on the day as well.

Half-day summer workshops are now available to book ☀️

You can now choose your date, pick your medium and head to the studios to get inspired. Everyone’s welcome!

This year, alongside our familiar favourites, we’re excited to introduce brand new workshops led by artists including @houghliz, @emmamcclure_artist and @rogertowndrow.

Every Friday throughout the summer holidays we will also be running short workshops for children aged 7-13.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to the sunny studios over the next few months!

Drawing + Painting on the beach 🏖

Join us in two weeks time for a weekend of food, drink, and drawing & painting on the beach!

We`ll be at St Ives Food & Drink Festival where you will be able to try your hand at Life Drawing on the Saturday and learn how to paint a still life on the Sunday.

No experience necessary, just turn up and have a go! Booking in advance is recommended but we will also try to take bookings on the day. See you on the beach.
