This week at St Ives School of Painting 💫

We are looking forward to a week of bright autumnal sunshine, which is perfect for our upcoming courses. All our students will be getting the opportunity to head outdoors!

Here`s what`s coming up:

🗓️ Mon-Weds: @julianvilarrubi leads Landscape & Composition for the first time in the Fuller Studio

🗓️ Mon-Weds: Artist @johndyergallery teaches `Painting St Ives: Your Narrative` for the first time, with a mixture of outdoor exploration and focused studio practice

🗓️ Thursday: You can still join us for our regular Thursday evening Life Drawing sessions, 18.30-20.30 at The Island Centre.

🗓️ Fri-Sun: @andrew.barrowman leads his sold out course, Autumn Seascapes in Oils!

This week at St Ives School of Painting 💫

It`s week two of @stivesseptemberfest! We have a very busy studio and all of our workshops have now sold out - however, there are still opportunities to join our 3-day course at the end of the week.

Here`s what`s coming up:

🗓️ Mon-Weds: Eleanor Crow leads our sold-out 3 day course, Still Life Variations

🗓️ Mon: Steven Buckler is running two workshops; Everyone Can Draw & Discover Mixed Media - perfect for learning the basics!

🗓️ Tues: Students will be capturing the unique streets and iconic harbour with Hilary Jean Gibson, through her sold out workshops `Postcards from St Ives`

🗓️ Weds: Jill Eisele leads her extremely popular painting workshops `Dramatic Landscapes` and `Dramatic Seascapes`

🗓️ Thurs: For the first time in the studio, artist Laura Menzies will be leading Creative Art Journaling and Expressive Ink + Acrylic Painting workshops

🗓️ Fri-Sun: We have just two places remaining on our 3-day course with Kitty Hillier, slow down and connect with your surroundings through Abstracting Nature

We have a jam-packed week full of courses and workshops, and @porthmeorstudios will also be bustling with various talks and events taking place throughout @stivesseptemberfest.

🗓️ Mon-Weds: @victoriagillowart leads our sold out 3-day course, Expressive Landscape Painting

🗓️ Mon: The first of our sold-out festival workshops take place with @ionasanders

🗓️ Tues: Liz Luckwell leads a morning session, Abstract Colour in St Ives, and has one place remaining on her afternoon course, Love Drawing Landscape!

🗓️ Weds: You can still join @greghumphriesart on his morning workshop, Surrealism, Magic + The Spirit of Place, in the afternoon he will be leading Mondrian, Landscape + The Roots of Abstraction (currently sold out)

🗓️ Thurs: @amyalbrightartist leads her two new sold out workshops Beyond the Brush and Land Meets Water

🗓️ Fri: We have 2 places left on @kittyhillier morning workshop, Mindful Ways to Paint ahead of her sold out Abstract Coastline workshop on Friday afternoon

🗓️ Fri-Sun: David Webb heads out into St Ives for his final 3-day watercolour course of the year!

A short break from workshops this week before we head into a celebration of the arts, music, and more as the September Festival returns to St Ives! In the meantime, here`s what`s coming up this week:

🗓️ Mon-Weds: Kitty Hillier leads our 3-day course, Unlocking Your Creativity, helping you to silence those doubting gremlins and generate new ideas.

🗓️ Fri-Sun: The brilliant Nina Squire leads our sold out course, Porthmeor Seascapes, where students can dive in and discover the unique techniques that are possible when painting with soft pastels

🗓️ The studio team are prepping for our first set of St Ives September Festival workshops, kicking off with Iona Sanders on Monday 15th!

"I don’t think I will stop creating. I have weeks where caring makes creating feel unreachable, but even in those weeks it can be as simple as a thought, some words in a note on my phone, a few lines. It doesn’t always have to be a long process in the studio."

In 2018, Sue Watt embarked on the Porthmeor Programme, our yearlong development course. As a mother and primary carer for her son Tom, he was and still is her inspiration for creating art. Sue took the decision to take the next step and join us in the studio after realising she needed more one to one guidance to enable her to move her practice forward, and she needed an opportunity to meet like-minded artists.

As we recruit students for our 2026 Porthmeor Programme, we caught up with Sue eight years later, to see how her life has changed since joining us in St Ives; and we share some of her moving work that she continues to create.

Learn to embrace the happy accidents 👇

Artist @@kerryharding_art believes the best work comes when your shoulders are down and the hours disappear - and so it has been her guiding principle through her years of teaching.

Her upcoming course, Poetry of Process, will be an opportunity for you to develop your painting in several directions through the act of painting itself, treading that fruitful bridge between intention and invention.
